Seasons of change are inevitable. In business and in life, we all walk through transitions — pivots, growth, setbacks, endings, new beginnings.
The danger isn’t the change itself. The danger is losing yourself in it.
Because we live in a world that defines us by what we do. Think about it: the first question we’re asked when meeting someone new is, “So, what do you do?” Not, “Who are you becoming?” or “What brings you joy?”
And when we tie our entire identity to titles and labels, seasons of change can feel like identity loss.
But I’m here to remind you: you’re more than your job title, your relationship status, or the role you happen to be holding in this moment. Leading through change is about staying rooted in who you are…so you can evolve without losing yourself.
Change has a way of shaking our sense of identity. A business pivot, a team restructure, a personal life transition…it can all feel destabilizing.
Because we’ve become conditioned to define ourselves by labels: CEO, entrepreneur, wife, mother, coach, leader. And when one of those labels shifts, it can feel like the ground beneath us disappears.
Losing yourself in change looks like:
But your identity is bigger than your circumstances. Who you are doesn’t change when your title does!
One of the biggest seasons of change I’ve ever walked through (as a business owner) was pivoting from strictly social media management to the operations and strategy work I do now…at the same time I was navigating a divorce.
Professionally and personally, I was stepping out of one identity and into another. Both shifts forced me to ask: Who am I, really? Who do I want to become in this next season?
It wasn’t easy. But what I learned is this: change doesn’t erase you, it refines you. It reveals what matters most, and it invites you to step into the next version of yourself with clarity and confidence!
As business owners especially, it’s easy for our identity to get wrapped up in work. Our business feels like an extension of who we are.
So when things shift — whether it’s scaling, pivoting, or facing a personal challenge — it can feel like our entire identity is being questioned.
Add to that the nervous system response of fear, uncertainty, or fight-or-flight, and it’s no wonder change feels destabilizing. Without grounding practices, we default to overworking, overcommitting, or over-identifying with labels just to feel safe.
The key isn’t to avoid change, it’s to stay anchored in who you are while you navigate it.
Here’s what helps me (and what you can experiment with):
Leading through change isn’t about holding everything together perfectly. It’s about remembering that your worth isn’t tied to what you do.
You are more than your business. More than your labels. More than the roles you play.
When you stay rooted in who you are, you can lead through any season…without losing yourself in the process.
Ready to create systems and support that ground you through every season of change? That’s exactly what we build together inside my Vision-to-Execution Accelerator.
